Johnny’s Luncheonette is a vibrant Newton diner that pairs community connection with an impressive food waste diversion and composting program.

This case study features Johnny’s Luncheonette, a community-oriented diner in Newton, MA, and its successful food scrap composting program developed in partnership with RecyclingWorks in Massachusetts. The diner diverts 600–700 pounds of food waste per week through an efficient front- and back-of-house separation system supported by multilingual signage and staff engagement. Collected food scraps are composted by Black Earth Compost, whose nutrient-rich soil amendment returns to Johnny’s outdoor planters, completing the loop. The diner’s educational tools—including children’s placemats and community collaborations with Green Newton—help make waste diversion visible, accessible, and replicable. The program not only supports Massachusetts’ organics waste ban but also inspires neighboring businesses to take action.
